The Almoravid Dynasty

The Almoravids were a Berber Islamic dynasty from the Sahara that ruled Morocco and al-Andalus from about 1040 to 1147. They founded Marrakesh and promoted strict Maliki Sunni Islam. They stopped the Christian Reconquista for a time.

Their empire weakened due to rebellion and religious unrest. The Almohads overthrew them in 1147. Their rule linked West Africa, Morocco, and Spain.
