The Byzantine Exarchate of Africa was a province centered on Carthage after Rome's western fall. It preserved Roman administration and Orthodox Christianity in North Africa. It was a base for resisting Berber and later Arab attacks.
The exarchate fell to the Arab conquest in the late 7th century. Carthage was captured in 698. North Africa then gradually became part of the Islamic world.
