The Ghana Empire was a West African trading state that flourished from about 300 to 1200 CE. It controlled gold and salt routes between the Sahara and the forest zone. Its capital, Kumbi Saleh, was a major commercial center.
Ghana declined due to drought, rebellion, and Almoravid pressure. It was replaced by the Mali Empire. Its legacy lived on in later West African states.
