The Kingdom of Benin was a powerful state in modern southern Nigeria. It flourished from the 13th to 19th centuries under the Oba dynasty. It was famous for bronze plaques, ivory carving, and a strong centralized government.
Benin traded with Europeans but resisted conquest until 1897, when British forces sacked Benin City. The kingdom was absorbed into colonial Nigeria. Its art and royal traditions survive today.
