The Kingdom of Ife

The Kingdom of Ife was a Yoruba city-state in southwestern Nigeria. It flourished from around the 11th to 15th centuries and is considered the spiritual homeland of the Yoruba. Its artists produced naturalistic bronze and terracotta heads.

Ife declined as Oyo and Benin rose. Its sacred kingship and art influenced neighboring states. It remains a central symbol of Yoruba identity.
