The Kingdom of Kongo was a powerful Central African state centered in modern Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It flourished from the 14th to 19th centuries and adopted Christianity in the late 15th century. Its kings traded with Portugal and later suffered from the slave trade.
Kongo faced civil wars, Portuguese influence, and economic decline. It fragmented in the 18th century. Its culture and language survive in the region.
