The Kingdom of Mutapa was a Shona state that emerged after Great Zimbabwe. It controlled gold trade and the Zambezi Valley from the 15th to 18th centuries. Portuguese traders and settlers increasingly interfered in its politics.
Mutapa weakened due to Portuguese pressure and internal division. It eventually fragmented into smaller states. Its history is central to Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
