The Mali Empire was a powerful West African state from the 13th to 16th centuries. Founded by Sundiata Keita, it controlled gold, salt, and trade routes. Its most famous ruler, Mansa Musa, made a legendary pilgrimage to Mecca.
Mali's power declined as subject states broke away. The Songhai Empire rose in its place. Mali survived in a smaller form into the 17th century.
