The Songhai Empire was a major West African state centered on the Niger River. It flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries under rulers like Sunni Ali and Askia Muhammad. Timbuktu became a center of Islamic learning and trade.
The empire fell to a Moroccan invasion in 1591. Its collapse fragmented the region. Smaller states and trade networks replaced it.
