The Sultanate of Adal

The Sultanate of Adal was a Muslim state in the Horn of Africa. It fought the Christian Ethiopian Empire in the 16th century. Its leader Ahmad ibn Ibrahim, called Gran, nearly conquered Ethiopia.

Ethiopia, with Portuguese help, defeated Adal in 1543. The sultanate then fragmented. Its legacy includes the spread of Islam in the region.
