The Zagwe Dynasty

The Zagwe Dynasty ruled Ethiopia from about 1137 to 1270. It is best known for rock-hewn churches at Lalibela. The dynasty promoted Christianity and trade in the Ethiopian highlands.

The Zagwe were overthrown by the Solomonic dynasty, which claimed descent from King Solomon. Their churches remain a major pilgrimage site. The dynasty's legacy is both religious and architectural.
