Great Zimbabwe was a major medieval city and trading state in southeastern Africa. It flourished from about 1100 to 1450. Its stone walls and towers are the largest ancient structures in sub-Saharan Africa. It controlled gold and ivory trade with the Swahili coast.
The city was abandoned as trade declined and resources ran low. Its legacy inspired the modern name of Zimbabwe. It remains a symbol of African civilization.
