French North Africa

French North Africa refers to Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco under French colonial rule. France invaded Algeria in 1830 and later established protectorates over Tunisia in 1881 and Morocco in 1912. The region was deeply transformed by settler colonialism.

Algeria became a settler colony and later fought a brutal independence war from 1954 to 1962. Tunisia and Morocco gained independence in 1956. French rule left lasting economic and cultural effects.
