The Barbary States

The Barbary States were the North African regencies of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli under Ottoman influence. They thrived on corsair raids and maritime trade from the 16th to 19th centuries. European powers paid tribute or fought them.

The United States and European navies attacked them in the early 19th century. France conquered Algiers in 1830. The Barbary system then collapsed.
