The Cape Colony

The Cape Colony was founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1652 at Cape Town. Britain took it in 1806 and expanded its borders through wars and treaties. It became a settler colony with a large enslaved and indigenous population.

The Cape Colony later joined the Union of South Africa in 1910. Its racial laws and economy helped shape apartheid. It remains a key part of South African history.
