Ancient Britain covers the prehistoric and Iron Age societies of the British Isles before and during Roman contact. Tribes such as the Brigantes and Iceni lived in hillforts and farmsteads, with rich metalwork and trade links to the continent. Their religious sites included Stonehenge and later druidic centers.
Rome invaded in 43 CE and held much of Britain until the early 5th century. Boudicca's revolt in 60 CE showed violent resistance, but Roman roads, towns, and baths transformed the south. Roman withdrawal left Britain open to Anglo-Saxon settlement.
