The Roman Kingdom, Republic, & Empire

Rome began as a small city-state, became a republic, then built a Mediterranean empire. Its legal system, army, roads, and citizenship policies shaped Europe for centuries. At its peak, Rome ruled from Britain to Egypt.

The republic collapsed in civil war, and Augustus became the first emperor in 27 BCE. The empire later split into west and east. The western half fell in 476 CE, while the eastern half survived as Byzantium.
