Kievan Rus'

Kievan Rus' was a medieval federation of Slavic and Norse-influenced lands centered on Kiev. It controlled trade routes from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Its rulers adopted Orthodox Christianity in 988.

Kievan Rus' fragmented into rival principalities in the 12th century. It was then devastated by the Mongol invasion in the 1240s. Its legacy shaped Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.
