The Crown of Castile

The Crown of Castile was a major medieval Iberian kingdom formed from Leon and Castile. It drove the Reconquista southward and became a center of sheep farming, wool trade, and Atlantic exploration. Its kings claimed leadership in Christian Spain.

Castile united with Aragon through the marriage of Isabella and Ferdinand in 1469. Together they conquered Granada in 1492 and sponsored Columbus. Castile then became the core of the Spanish Empire.
