The First Bulgarian Empire was a powerful medieval state in the Balkans. It fought Byzantium and adopted Orthodox Christianity in 864. The Second Bulgarian Empire rose after Byzantine rule ended in 1185.
Both empires controlled trade and culture in southeastern Europe. They were eventually conquered by the Ottomans in the late 14th century. Bulgarian identity survived under foreign rule.
