The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a large medieval state covering modern Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. It expanded east as Kievan Rus' declined. Its rulers later converted to Catholicism and united with Poland.
The union with Poland created a vast commonwealth. Lithuania retained its own laws and army for a time. It was eventually absorbed into the Russian Empire in the late 18th century.
