The Grand Duchy of Moscow began as a small principality under Mongol rule. Its princes slowly gained power by collecting tribute for the Golden Horde. Moscow eventually became the leading Russian state.
It defeated the Mongols at Kulikovo in 1380 and later threw off Tatar rule in 1480. Moscow expanded and became the core of the Russian state. Its rulers took the title tsar.
