The Kingdom of Poland emerged in the 10th century under the Piast dynasty. It adopted Christianity in 966 and became a major Central European power. Later it united with Lithuania to form a large commonwealth.
Poland fought the Teutonic Knights and expanded eastward. Internal noble power and foreign invasions weakened it. It was partitioned by Russia, Prussia, and Austria in the late 18th century.
