The Kingdom of Sicily was founded by Normans in the 12th century and included Sicily and southern Italy. It was a wealthy, multiethnic state with Latin, Greek, Arab, and Norman influences. Later it passed to Hohenstaufen, Angevin, and Aragonese rulers.
The kingdom split into Naples and Sicily for long periods. It remained a battleground for Mediterranean powers. It was eventually absorbed into the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
