The Papal States were territories in central Italy ruled directly by the popes. They began forming in the 8th century and lasted until 1870. The popes used them as a political base for spiritual and temporal power.
The Papal States often fought with emperors, kings, and local nobles. They became a major patron of Renaissance art. Italian unification finally stripped the papacy of most of its land.
