The Republic of Genoa

Genoa was a powerful Italian maritime republic and rival of Venice. Its merchants traded across the Mediterranean and Black Sea, and it controlled colonies like Crimea and Corsica. Genoese bankers also financed European rulers.

Genoa declined after Ottoman expansion and internal factional strife. It lost Corsica to France in 1768. The republic was briefly revived and then abolished by Napoleon.
