Venice was a wealthy maritime republic in the northern Adriatic. It built a trading empire across the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Its government was an oligarchic republic led by a doge and councils.
Venice fought Genoa and the Ottoman Empire for trade dominance. It slowly lost power as Atlantic trade routes grew. The republic survived until Napoleon conquered it in 1797.
