The Swiss Confederacy

The Swiss Confederacy began in 1291 as an alliance of mountain communities resisting Habsburg control. Through victories against Austria and Burgundy, it grew into a loose confederation of cantons. Swiss soldiers became famous as mercenaries.

The confederacy remained outside the Holy Roman Empire in practice. It was officially recognized in 1648. Its neutrality and federal structure influenced later Switzerland.
