The Mixtec Civilization

The Mixtec civilization was a group of city-states in southern Mexico, especially Oaxaca. They flourished from about 900 to 1521 CE and were famous for codices, metalwork, and skilled artisans. They often competed and intermarried with the Zapotecs.

The Mixtecs were conquered by the Aztecs and later the Spanish. Their codices preserve genealogy and history. Their art and language survive in Oaxaca today.
