The colonial Caribbean was divided among Spanish, French, British, and Dutch empires. These islands produced sugar, coffee, and tobacco using enslaved African labor. They were among the most profitable colonies in the world.

The Haitian Revolution ended French rule in Saint-Domingue in 1804. Slavery was abolished across most of the Caribbean in the 19th century. Many islands later became independent nations or remained overseas territories.
