Before 1795, Hawaii was divided into competing chiefdoms. Each island had its own ruling ali'i and fought for land, status, and trade. Contact with Europeans introduced guns, disease, and new goods.
Kamehameha I used Western weapons and tactics to unify the islands by 1810. He founded the Kingdom of Hawaii. The old chiefdom system was transformed into a centralized monarchy.
