The Yap Empire was a Micronesian trading and political network centered on Yap. It linked islands across the Caroline Islands through tribute and exchange. Its famous stone money was used in complex social transactions.
Yap's power declined under German and later Japanese colonial rule. Its traditional navigation and stone money remain cultural symbols. The empire was never a large territorial state but a maritime network.
