French Polynesia

French Polynesia is a French overseas territory in the South Pacific. France annexed Tahiti in 1842 and later the Society Islands, Tuamotus, and Marquesas. It was used for nuclear testing in the 20th century.

The territory gained greater autonomy but remains part of France. Independence movements exist but have not succeeded. Tourism and pearls are major industries.
