The Kingdom of Tonga was unified in 1845 by King George Tupou I. It became a constitutional monarchy in 1875 and avoided formal colonization by Britain. It was a protectorate from 1900 to 1970.
Tonga remains an independent Polynesian monarchy today. Its royal traditions and Christianity are central to national identity. It is one of the few Pacific states never fully colonized.
