The Muisca Confederation

The Muisca Confederation was a group of chiefdoms in the highlands of modern Colombia. They flourished from about 600 to 1600 CE and were known for goldwork, salt, and agriculture. Their society was organized into powerful chiefdoms like Bacatá and Tunja.

The Spanish conquered them in the 1530s, lured by the legend of El Dorado. Their gold artifacts are famous today. Their culture was largely absorbed into colonial New Granada.
