Colonial Brazil was Portugal's largest and wealthiest colony. It was built on sugar plantations, gold mining, and enslaved African labor. The capital was Salvador and later Rio de Janeiro. It was ruled by a Portuguese governor-general and later a viceroy.

Brazil became the center of the Portuguese empire when the royal family fled there in 1808. It declared independence in 1822 as an empire. It was the only Latin American monarchy.
