The Spanish American Wars of Independence

The Spanish American Wars of Independence. The Spanish American Wars of Independence were a series of revolutionary armed conflicts fought across Spanish America between 1808 and 1826, resulting in the creation of several independent nations. Triggered by the Napoleonic invasion of Spain and the deposition of King Ferdinand VII, local juntas formed across South America to claim self-governance. This era is historically momentous because it completely dismantled Spain's continental empire in the Americas.

Brilliant military commanders like Simón Bolívar in the north and José de San Martín in the south led insurgent armies across harsh Andean terrain to defeat royalist forces. Key battles like Boyacá, Carabobo, and Ayacucho secured sovereignty for regions that became Gran Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. However, the newly formed republics were quickly plagued by territorial fragmentation, economic devastation, and political instability dominated by regional military strongmen (caudillos).
