The Viceroyalty of New Granada was a Spanish colony covering modern Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela. It was established in 1717 and centered on Bogotá. It produced gold, tobacco, and textiles.
It became a center of independence movements led by Simón Bolívar. Gran Colombia was formed from its territories in 1819. It later split into separate nations.
