Majapahit Empire

Majapahit Empire. The Majapahit Empire was a massive Hindu-Buddhist thalassocracy based on the island of Java that reached its absolute peak in the 14th century CE. Founded in 1293 following a spectacularly failed Mongol invasion of the island, it rapidly expanded its influence across the Indonesian archipelago and the Malay Peninsula. This state is highly significant because it is widely considered the greatest and most powerful empire in the history of Indonesia, deeply influencing modern Indonesian nationalism. They produced incredible epic literature detailing a highly sophisticated, cosmopolitan society deeply enriched by global trade.

The empire was held together by a combination of naval intimidation and loose tributary relationships rather than direct administrative control. Following the death of their greatest prime minister, Gajah Mada, the central authority quickly began to weaken. A devastating civil war completely exhausted the royal treasury and deeply fractured the ruling family. By the early 16th century, the severely weakened empire was finally eclipsed and absorbed by powerful, newly emerging Islamic sultanates along the northern coast of Java.
