The Gupta Empire

The Gupta Empire. The Gupta Empire was an ancient Indian state that covered much of the subcontinent from the early 4th to late 6th centuries CE. Although it falls chronologically earlier than most medieval states, it serves as a crucial transition point into the classical Indian medieval period. This era matters deeply because it is widely celebrated as the Golden Age of India, marked by extraordinary advancements in mathematics, astronomy, and literature. Scholars during this period invented the concept of zero and the decimal system, discoveries that completely revolutionized global mathematics.

The empire maintained a highly decentralized structure, relying on a complex network of local vassal kings rather than strict imperial control. This loose system worked well during periods of peace but proved highly vulnerable to external pressure. In the late 5th century, the White Huns launched devastating and repeated invasions from the northwest, completely exhausting the imperial treasury. The central Gupta authority eventually collapsed entirely, leaving northern India fractured into numerous smaller kingdoms.
