The Dutch Republic / Kingdom of the Netherlands

The Dutch Republic won independence from Spain in the 17th century and became a major trading power. Its East India Company dominated Asian trade, and Amsterdam was a financial center. The Dutch also built colonies in the Americas and Africa.

The republic declined after wars with Britain and France. The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. It later lost Belgium and most overseas colonies.
