The French Revolution began in 1789 and overthrew the monarchy, aristocracy, and church privileges. It produced the Declaration of Rights, the Reign of Terror, and years of war. Napoleon Bonaparte then seized power in 1799.
Napoleon made reforms and conquered much of Europe before his defeat in 1815. The revolution's ideas of liberty and nationalism spread widely. Europe's conservative powers tried to restore order afterward.
