The German Empire was founded in 1871 after Prussia's victory over France. It was a federal monarchy with a powerful military and rapid industrial growth. It became Europe's leading industrial power.
Germany's naval buildup and alliances increased tension before World War I. It lost the war and the empire collapsed in 1918. The Weimar Republic replaced it.
