The Habsburg Monarchy was a multiethnic empire ruling Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, and later parts of Italy and the Balkans. It was a major European power and a center of conservative Catholicism. In 1804 it became the Austrian Empire.
It fought Napoleon and later competed with Prussia for German leadership. The 1867 compromise created Austria-Hungary. The empire collapsed at the end of World War I.
