Belgium became independent in 1830 after breaking away from the Netherlands. It was a constitutional monarchy and a center of early industrialization. Its location made it a battleground in European wars.
Belgium acquired the Congo Free State in 1885, later the Belgian Congo, and ruled it brutally. The country was invaded in both World Wars. It remains a federal state divided by language.
