Prussia rose from a small German state to the leader of German unification. Its military reforms and efficient bureaucracy made it a great power. Otto von Bismarck used diplomacy and war to defeat Denmark, Austria, and France.
In 1871, Prussia created the German Empire with the Prussian king as emperor. Prussia remained dominant within Germany. It was abolished after World War II.
