Romania became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1877 and was declared a kingdom in 1881. It united Wallachia and Moldavia and later gained Transylvania after World War I. It was rich in oil and agriculture.
Romania faced political instability and fascist movements in the 1930s. It fought in World War II and then fell under communist rule. The monarchy was abolished in 1947.
