The Principality of Serbia won autonomy from the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century. It became a kingdom in 1882. Serbia sought to unite South Slavs and expand into Ottoman lands.
Its rivalry with Austria-Hungary helped trigger World War I. Serbia suffered huge losses but emerged on the winning side. It later became part of Yugoslavia.
