Russia grew from the Grand Duchy of Moscow into a vast empire under the tsars. Peter the Great modernized the military and founded St. Petersburg. Catherine the Great expanded south and west.
The empire became a major European power but remained economically backward. Serfdom was abolished in 1861, but unrest continued. The Russian Revolution in 1917 ended the monarchy.
